Word by Wort

Privacy

Your data in Word by Wort: the apps, the web version at app.wordbywort.com, and this website. The same notice is in the app, under Settings › Account › Privacy.

What Word by Wort keeps

Your account: your email address, or the private relay address Apple gives if you hide yours, and which sign-in methods you use (Apple, Google, email). Your learning: the words and phrases you study, your answers and reviews, lesson, reading and grammar results, memory aids and their pictures, and your settings. Your devices: a name such as "iPhone" and when each last synced.

Why

Only to run Word by Wort for you: to keep your progress safe if a device is lost, and to keep your Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android devices in step. Nothing is used for advertising, sold, or shared with anyone for their own use.

Where

On your devices, and in your account with Supabase, which hosts Word by Wort's database and file storage in the European Union (Ireland). Apple and Google handle signing in with them; Word by Wort receives your email address (or Apple's relay address) and an account identifier, never your password.

Who can see it

Only you. Each account can read and change only its own data. The developer can see that accounts exist to keep the service running, but does not look at your learning data.

AI help

When you ask for AI help (feedback on exam writing or speaking, a conversation, your journal, or simplifying a text), the words you wrote or said or the text you chose, your level and, for a conversation, words from your cards are sent to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the reply. Nothing else about you is sent, not even your email address. Under Anthropic's commercial terms it is not used to train their models. Word by Wort's server records only how much each request used, never what you wrote.

Weekly league

Only if you join it. The other learners in your league group (up to 20 each week) see your display name, picture and that week's XP, and nothing else. Your app sends Word by Wort's server your XP for the week. Leaving the league removes you and your weekly XP.

Missing words

When you look up a word the dictionary doesn't have, the word is kept with your synced data. Word by Wort counts these words across everyone, without names, to decide which words to add next.

Browser extension

Only if you install it and sign in. It reads nothing until you choose Add to Word by Wort, and then only the text you selected, the sentence around it, and the page's title and address (without anything after a question mark). These go to your account, like the rest of your words, and nowhere else. You can turn the extension off in its toolbar menu at any time.

How long

Until you delete your account. Settings › Account › Delete account removes the account, everything uploaded to it and its pictures straight away; copies may remain in the hosting service's routine backups for a short time before they expire. The words on your devices stay there until you remove them. Your forum posts stay, so others can still read the answers, but your name and picture are removed from them; remove a post yourself first if you want it gone.

Your rights

You can download everything your account holds at any time (Settings › Account › Download my data), correct it in the app, or delete it. Under UK data protection law you can also ask what is held about you, object, or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Cookies and tracking

No cookies, no advertising and no tracking. The apps on your phone, tablet and computer send no usage statistics. The web version at app.wordbywort.com counts visits and a few actions (such as an account made, a review finished or a word looked up) with Umami Cloud, which uses no cookies and stores nothing that identifies you: only totals.

This website

wordbywort.com sets no cookies. We count visits with Umami Cloud, a cookieless analytics service that stores nothing that identifies you: only totals such as pages viewed, the country and the type of browser. The same count covers app.wordbywort.com, so we can see how many visitors go on to try the app. Our web host keeps standard server logs (such as IP addresses and the pages requested) for a short time, for security.

This website has no sign-in. Word by Wort accounts, in the app and the browser extension, are handled by Supabase, which hosts them in the European Union.
